Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that actually consists of two words. Ayur, which loosely means life, and Veda, which means knowledge or science.
The Vedas in India form the basis of religion, philosophy and science which are seen as a unity, just like the unity of body, mind and soul.
It is a way of life that aims to promote health and well-being. This is achieved by finding a balance in our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Ayurveda looks at the person as a whole and believes in the self-healing ability of every person.
dosha
In Ayurveda, every person is unique and has its own 'nature'.
This 'nature' is also called our 'constitution type' or dosha.
There are three dosha types namely, Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Every person possesses these three but however they are divided, often one is more dominant, determined by our unique nature.
When we are out of balance, we can influence this by not over-stimulating our dominant dosha.
For example, there are vata-enhancing foods, pitta-increasing weather conditions or a kapha-reducing lifestyle.
Insight into our own dosha is therefore important.
This self-knowledge in combination with the effect of foods on our dosha gives us answers about physical symptoms and how we can influence them.
